Essential Requirements for International Students
If you’re planning to study in the United Kingdom, obtaining a UK Student Visa (formerly known as the Tier 4 Visa) is a crucial step. At London Education Group we help international students understand and meet the necessary requirements to ensure a smooth visa application process.
Here is what you typically need to apply for a UK Student Visa:
1. Academic Qualifications
You must provide evidence of your previous education, which should match the level of study you’re applying for:
- High School Diploma – for foundation or undergraduate degrees
- Bachelor’s Degree – for postgraduate or master’s programs
- Master’s Degree – for doctoral (PhD) level study
Your academic documents must be official and, in most cases, translated into English if issued in another language.
2. English Language Proficiency
You must demonstrate your ability to speak and understand English. Commonly accepted qualifications include:
- IELTS Academic – with a minimum score of 6.0 or above (requirements may vary by course or institution)
- Other Approved Tests – such as TOEFL or PTE, in some cases Duolingo
- University In-House Tests – Some UK institutions offer their own online English tests as an alternative to IELTS
3. Personal Statement or Essay
Most universities require a personal statement that outlines:
- Why you chose the course and institution
- Your academic and professional background
- Your career goals
A strong, clear, and well-structured essay increases your chances of receiving an offer.
4. Work Experience (if applicable)
For certain postgraduate courses, especially in business, healthcare, or professional studies, relevant work experience may be required. It’s important to include:
- A detailed CV or résumé
- Letters or references from previous employers
5. References
You will typically need to provide one or two references:
- Academic Reference – from a teacher, professor, or academic advisor
- Professional Reference – from an employer or supervisor (especially if you’ve been out of education for some time)
These references should speak to your academic ability, character, or work ethic.
6. Proof of Funds
To meet UK visa requirements, you must show that you have enough money to support yourself during your studies. This usually includes:
- Tuition Fees – for the first year (or full course fee if it’s under one year)
- Living Expenses – depending on your study location (e.g., London requires more funds than other cities)
The required amount must be held in your bank account for at least 28 consecutive days before you apply.
7. Additional Documents
Depending on your case, you may also need:
- A valid passport
- CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) – issued by your chosen university
- Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate – if you’re from a listed country
- Visa application form and visa application fee payment

✍️ Studying English in the UK – Language Visa Information
If you do not meet the English language requirements for direct entry into a UK university, you may still be eligible to come to the UK to study at an accredited English language college. Depending on the duration of your course, there are two main visa options:
- For courses up to 6 months, students typically apply for a Standard Visitor Visa (tourist visa).
- For English courses lasting more than 6 months and up to 11 months, students must apply for a Short-Term Study Visa.
At London Education Group, we work exclusively with UKVI-approved and accredited colleges that specialize in English language preparation. To apply for a language visa, students usually need to provide:
- A statement explaining the need for English study (e.g., for future academic or professional goals)
- Proof of strong ties to their home country (such as family, employment, or ongoing studies)
- An official offer letter from a UK English language college (we assist in securing this)
- Evidence of previous English learning attempts, if applicable
We are here to guide you through the entire process — from choosing the right college to preparing and submitting your visa application.
